schiff / dürnstein

After the Melk tour, we baked in the sun for a few hours on a boat that took us down the Danube. Seriously, sehr heiß. My skin is going to be the color of a potato (the outside) by the end of August. Hopefully not the texture though. I'm wearing sunscreen whenever I can.

The scenery around the Donau and the Rhine is so amazing. I am planning on biking on the flat, paved bike trails that follow the river on my free weekend...which is in 5 days. !! ! ! !
random castles, mountains, vineyards. everywhere. on and on.

We arrived in Dürnstein and promptly began a steep climb up to the ruins on top of a mountain. I was definitely wheezing and leaking sweat tears most of the way, but it was only about a 30 minute hike and the view was TOTALLY WORTH IT.

at the bottom, ascending through the town of Dürnstein:

you go, ann:

almost to the top! the teal speck is Frau Lonnes:

final view, from the top of the ruins in the previous picture:

good stuff. I've gotten so many fantastic viewpoints in Europe. Red rooftops, all day every day. It is really damn amazing that this view has hardly changed for hundreds of years.

after descending back down, I got some ice cream, which I had been thinking about for a good part of the time on the top. Have I mentioned here that Austrians (and Europeans in general) really, really like ice cream? There are gelaterias on almost every block, and it's all so so good, much better than in the states. I think it's partially because ice (as in frozen water) is such a luxury here. I've only gotten ice in a drink once so far in Austria. Also, here it's not 4 or 5 dollars for a small amount because it's not as ~fancy~

We got back to Wien a few hours later by train and ate dinner in the 3. Bezirk on Frau Lonnes's bill. Geröstete Knödel for me again. Not as good as the first place, but still schmeckt mir gut. I want to learn how to make it and show off all my Cultural Accumulation when I go back to Amerika. Everyone was sehr müde, and still probably are at this point. I can hardly keep typing, myself.
